In the reading about the Professor who enrolled in her own university I found many connections with my life. When she talked about the fact that she didn't know the "slang" of the kids I found a connection. This idea is also discussed in the other reading in the section about symbolic language. I think every year there is a number of words that come about and everyone uses. Then in the blink of an eye they are gone and forgotten. Students move on to the next big thing. All the language we use applies to the world around us but the world is ever changing so the language has to change with it. This idea also applies to numerous other things in our culture. For example music, games, and electronics.
I also found a connection with the first week being impossible to plan everything out and work out time schedules. I am currently struggling with time management. Making time for friends, school, activities, eating, sleeping, and relaxation has proved to be one of the hardest things I have ever done. It is a whole new animal to take on in college. She also discussed how so many people in her dorm had such radically different schedules. I have yet to find someone that has the exact same schedule. That being said it is a hideous task to make time with people who have opposite schedules as you.
Nathan also brings up the point of female and male dorm situations. Like we discussed in class males tend to have plain rooms with just the essentials and not care about anything else. Females decorate and have every last thing that they could possibly use. I believe this is due to the fact that females want places to feel like home. They also want to receive compliments and make friends based on what they own or how they decorate. It is a different culture between the different genders. We create a culture that works for us and is almost a sub-culture of the world around us. In the "Culture as a Verb" section of the second reading, it is mentioned that culture can be a climate or ambience. I found this to work well with the idea that females create their own culture with a different climate and ambiance. While men often have opposite ideas in their social and dorm culture.
I agreed whole heartedly with the majority of both of the books we read. They gave me a new way to look at things in college and a new way to see how other people are struggling just as much as I am.
